Have you considered a career in plumbing but didn’t pursue it because you were taught that only a college degree help you achieve success? That if you didn’t go to college, you’d end up on the streets? It’s time to flush those beliefs down the drain. Unfortunately, there are many stereotypes about the plumbing, or any other skilled trade industry. The media constantly depicts plumbers as uneducated, smelly men who can’t seem to keep their pants from sliding down. Well, our team at PF Plumbing is here to tell you these stereotypes are far from the truth. In order for a plumber to conduct business today, he or she must pass through rigorous training and standards to receive a license. In fact, working as a plumber, or having a skilled trade career, can be just as beneficial, if not more, than having a college education.

The Benefits of a Plumbing Career

Think about what initially drew you to the idea of a career in the plumbing industry. Perhaps it’s because you’re handy with a wrench and wanted to put that skill to use. Or maybe it’s because you are attracted to the idea of potentially setting your own schedule. Both of those are valid reasons, but we hope we can shed some light on other potential advantages of a skilled trade career.

You Can Do Work that You Enjoy

The dream for anyone is to be able to find a job that incorporates their skillset on a daily basis. Although you may study a subject and develop certain techniques while pursuing a four-year degree, many times the job you get once you graduate doesn’t relate or utilize them. However, a skilled trade, by definition alone, means that you get to practice those skills consistently. Not only does this mean that you get to spend time doing work you’re interested in and enjoy, but you’ll also continue to improve your skillset through constant practice.

You Don’t Have to Worry About the Job Market

Today, more than ever, there is an extremely high demand for people who can do any number of skilled trades. This is due to a variety of reasons, including the fact that many of the baby boomers who populate the plumbing, construction, mechanical, or electrical industries are retiring, which means there is more of a need for people to replace them than ever. Additionally, the constant societal pressure to pursue a college education means that high-paying jobs in any skilled trade industry remain unfilled. And while other industries are now resorting to outsourcing, skilled trade jobs require a person to be local and be able to physically complete a task. Therefore, there will continue to be a high demand for plumbers, electricians, construction workers, and other skilled trades.

It Costs Less Than a College Education

With the current student debt crisis, it’s no surprise that a four-year degree in an incredibly expensive endeavor. And this doesn’t even account for the time you must invest in your studies as well. The worst part is that a college education doesn’t guarantee you’ll even end up with your dream job, or a high paying one. However, when you pursue a skilled trade career, such as plumbing, you’ll find that the length and cost of the training programs are much more reasonable. And, you’re almost guaranteed to end up on a job site—many programs require apprenticeships or practical training in the field.

It Provides You Flexibility

Have you ever left work, arrived home, and continued to do more work-related tasks? Or perhaps you’ve checked your work email despite it being the weekend? Oftentimes, people in non-skilled trade career pathways are working or thinking about work around the clock, unable to untether themselves from their jobs. And while many people think that a career in a skilled trade wouldn’t allow any flexibility, this is not the case. Even if you’re a plumber that offers 24-hour emergency services, your job begins when you arrive at the job site and ends when you leave for the day. You cannot possibly take the work home with you.

Additionally, as you continue to grow and build up your clientele, you can start your own company where you have the freedom to set your own hours or hire others to handle the work for you.

It Awards You with More Opportunities for Career Growth

Are you stuck in a job that’s become stagnant, with no room to advance? When you pursue a skilled trade career, such as becoming a plumber, the ability to advance and grow your career is completely in your hands. With multiple avenues for professional development, such as additional training programs, certificates, and special licensing, you can easily become an expert in your field. The more specialized and in-demand your skillset is, the more job opportunities you’ll see.
